What Size Inverter Does My RV Need?
What Size Inverter Does My RV Need?
An inverter converts battery power into household-style AC power. The right size depends on what you plan to operate, which loads may run together, starting surges and the capacity of the battery bank.
List Your AC Loads
Record the running wattage and starting requirement of televisions, computers, coffee makers, microwave ovens, induction cooktops, refrigerators, medical equipment, power tools and air conditioners. Size for realistic simultaneous use rather than adding every appliance in the RV.
Continuous and Surge Power
Continuous wattage is what the inverter supplies over time. Surge wattage is temporary output used when motors and compressors start. A unit may handle a steady load yet shut down when a compressor starts.
Pure Sine Wave Power
Quality pure sine wave inverters are the appropriate choice for many sensitive electronics and motor-driven loads. Some devices may operate poorly or run hotter on modified sine wave power.
The DC Side Must Match
A large inverter can draw very high current from the batteries. Battery capacity, cable size, fuses, disconnects, cable length and connection quality must all support the load. An inverter creates no energy; it only converts stored energy.
Inverter/Chargers
An inverter/charger combines AC power conversion, battery charging and transfer functions. It must be integrated correctly with shore power, generator input, branch circuits, grounding and neutral requirements.
Professional Inverter Installation
Infinite RV & Marine designs and installs RV inverter, lithium battery and solar systems in San Diego and Southern California. We evaluate the complete system rather than selecting equipment by wattage alone.
